The Bottelary ward is situated on the slopes of the Bottelary mountain range in the Stellenbosch district and is resident to some of the leading winemakers in South Africa. With a diverse grape resource spread throughout Bottelary, Bottelary Hills has an opportunity to produce a matchless range of quality wines, aimed at mid and premium price points.
Most of the vineyards in Bottelary lie on north
facing slopes, which lend themselves to premium
quality red wine production. There are however a couple of east
facing slopes at heights of 300m a.s.l, which are capable of producing
exciting Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays.
Where Pinotage is concerned the ward is acknowledged
as being at the forefront of viticulture and
viniculture, taking 28% of the ABSA Top 10 awards since its inception
in 1997. Bottelary boasts the oldest
commercial Pinotage vineyard. However it is often discussed that Shiraz
and Cabernet are most suited to this region. Many of the producers have
won a significant number of awards in local competitions such as the
Veritas, Juliet Cullinan and Micheal Angelo competitions.
Internationally, Bottelary has done equally well.
By developing a brand that reflects the style and quality produced in
the ward, coupled with other marketing initiatives, our goal is to set
the standards needed to become South Africa's leading producing
region and to provide sought after wine in the price points
and markets we choose to operate in.
Bottelary Hills will offer 2 brands,
an entry / mid range brand named M23 and the
other named Bottelary Hills which will be
directed at the upper limits of the South African / New World range.
The initial range has been developed by the below producers. In time
the range will be drawn from all the producers, including the growers
in the Bottelary ward. Understandably not all the producers are able
to supply wine in the short term. They are however committed to developing
Bottelary as a ward.
